  * 96 Punkte WINESPECTATOR: "Rich and concentrated, with a generous mix of currant, blackberry, wild berry and mocha-laced oak. Intense, yet avoids being heavy, turning sleek and elegant. Deftly balanced and tightly focused, with a complex, lingering finish that ends with hints of herb and black olive. Drink now through 2015. 875 cases made." * 94 Punkte Robert Parker The WINE ADVOCATE: "The home property of the successful husband and wife team of winemaking guru Mark Herold and his graphic designer wife, Erika Gottl, Merus has produced a blockbuster 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. These cuvees are made from super-ripe fruit, spend 18-20 months in 100% new French oak (usually Taransaud), and are bottled without fining or filtration. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot and Malbec, the full-bodied, dense 2004 offers notes of blackberries, blueberries, espresso roast, and smoky oak, a super-rich mouthfeel, good freshness and purity, and enough acidity and tannin to provide structure as well as definition. It will be delicious young, but should become more civilized in 4-5 years, and keep for two decades."

  * 95 Punkte Robert Parker The WINE ADVOCATE: "The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/purple color along with a rich bouquet of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, sweet earth, and smoky, spicy oak. With full body, abundant fruit, glycerin, and sweet tannin, a multilayered mouthfeel, and stunning upside potential, it is accessible enough to be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for two decades. The flagship estate of Mark Herold and his wife, Erika Gottl, Merus produced 750 cases of the 2003, and there will probably be even less of the 2004. This cuvee admirably showcases Herold’s winemaking philosophy as well as skills - late harvesting, super-ripe fruit, aging in 100% new French barrels (usually Taransaud), and bottling without fining or filtration after 18-20 months of cellaring. It’s a philosophy built on patience as well as labor. Herold’s success with such new projects as Buccella, Hestan Vineyards, Harris Estate, and Kamen is further evidence that the man knows what to do in the vineyard and the winery."

  * 96 Robert Parker THE WINE ADVOCATE: "A superb effort from then-proprietor Mark Herold and his former wife, Erika Gottl, the 2001 Merus reveals an opaque purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of camphor, graphite, blackberries, blueberry liqueur and subtle oak. It has resolved most of its tannins and is now a full-bodied, concentrated, well-balanced, impressively endowed stunner that has hit its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for another 10-15+ years."

Go ahead, give it a shot!
