Chateau Cos d´Estournel

Chateau Cos d´Estournel 2001

17,5+ JANCIS ROBINSON: "Dark crimson. Polished, exotic nose. Sweet and rich and SO unlike Montrose, it’s almost a joke! But it’s much more attractive and juicier than Montrose… real life here. Polish without excess sweetness."

93 JAMES SUCKLI´NG: "Velvety textured with soft and silky tannins and a chocolate, meat and berry character. Full and round. Slightly forgotten and delicious. Drink now."

93 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "This is a very pretty wine. Instead of concentration and depth, you find good purity of fruit, lots of spice, silky tannins and an elegant, soft, fresh, finish with more of that spicy, fruit quality. This is drinking quite well today. The wine was made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot."

93 THE WINEADVOCATE: "A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d’Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this stylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years."

92 ANTONIO GALLONI: "Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, complex aromas of cassis, graphite, eucalyptus and tobacco. Fat and sweet but shapely, with impressive density and underlying structure. Flavors of plum, mint, roasted nuts and sweet oak. Fairly full for young Cos, but quite suave. Finishes with firm but smooth tannins and excellent grip. Better than the 2000."

92 WINESPECTATOR: "Suave, with a cool, minty hint weaving around the core of mulled red currant, blackberry and plum fruit. Lovely spice, black tea and singed juniper notes are perfectly inlaid throughout, showing a tug of charcoal at the very end.—Blind ´01/´03/´05 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2017). Drink now through 2025. 17,705 cases made."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "The 2001 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot—a very high percentage of Merlot in this vintage and a very late harvest, which started on October 1st. Deep garnet in color, the nose is singing with savory notes of smoked meats, tapenade, bay leaves and beef drippings with a core of plum preserves, redcurrant jelly, dried cherries and baked blackcurrants with wafts of peppermint tea and dried roses. Medium-bodied, the palate practically tingles with vibrant dried herbs, red fruit preserves and minty notes, structured with firm, finely grained tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and minerally."

JAMES SUCKLING: "Velvety textured with soft and silky tannins and a chocolate, meat and berry character. Full and round. Slightly forgotten and delicious. Drink now."

JEB DUNNUCK: "The 2001 Château Cos D'Estournel is fully mature, with a complex, sweet nose of darker currants, leafy tobacco, damp earth, and truffle that shows more floral and spicy nuances with time in the glass. These all carry to a medium-bodied, elegant Saint- Estèphe with fine tannins and terrific balance. This classy, elegant wine is best enjoyed over the coming decade."
92
THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Medium-bodied, elegant, soft, round and polished, you find espresso, vanilla, smoke, licorice and ripe, sweet cherries on the nose and palate. The finish leaves with you ripe, fresh, lush red fruits wrapped in coffee beans. Drink it now, or age it a few more years, either way, it is quite nice."

WEINWISSER: "Mitteldunkles Rubin-Purpur.
