WINE SPECTATOR: "Dark color, with decadent aromas of truffles, meat, ripe berries and tobacco. Turns to sweet, crushed berries. Full-bodied, with very polished tannins and a berry and mineral aftertaste. The serious tannin structure is still hiding behind the fruit of the wine. Tightly wound and beautiful. Solid as a rock. A classic wine.--´88/´98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2011."

JANCIS ROBINSON: "Mid ruby, lots of tobacco on the nose and a round fruity palate already. Round and rich. Lots of tannin and chew underneath. There’s just the slightly spiky sensation of acidity on the finish."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025."
