1990 Chateau Climens
94 THE WINE ADVOCATE: "Tasted at the Bordeaux Index’s Chateau Climens dinner. A deeper hue than the ’89, this ’90 Climens has a powerful bouquet with barley sugar, tangerine, orange zest and honeycomb, the palate viscous on the entry, fat and full of glycerine, with tangy marmalade, honey, dried apricot and a touch of lemongrass right on the finish. This is a big-boned Climens, heady and hedonistic, although perhaps both the ’88 and ’90 and beginning to show more refinement? Like the ’89, the bottle tasted at the chateau in April showed better."
93+ STEPHEN TANZER: "Rich amber-gold color. Slightly edgy, botrytized aromas of honey, vanilla, marmalade, caramel, mint and barley sugar. Thick and powerful, with terrific intensity of flavor and elevated alcohol. Suggestions of honey and cooked fruit. An atypically powerful style of Climens whose substantial dry extract gives it an almost solid impression. Not terribly sweet on the aftertaste (despite a relatively high 70 grams per liter residual sugar), which features hints of grapefruit and caramel and a slight alcoholic harshness. This will require many years of additional aging, and may yet achieve a better balance."
18 JANCIS ROBINSON: "Actually at first seems lighter and less intense than the 1991 in terms of weight, although it has less acid. Lively nose with lots of sweetness and richness."
93 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Honeyed apricots, pineapples, and peaches are on display in the nose. Lighter than I would have expected on the palate. Everything was in balance. The wine retains a lot of freshness and good acidity."
