Napa Valley Harlan Estate

1997 Harlan Estate

97 WINE SPECTATOR: "A great bottle, ripe, intense, structured, focused and concentrated, with youthful, vibrant, layered flavors, gaining velocity and length. There´s a tremendous finish.--Non-blind Harlan retrospective (2010). Drink now through 2020. 2,100 cases made."

97 ANTONIO GALLONI: "Saturated ruby. Liqueur-like superripe nose combines roasted cherry, black raspberry, minerals and Valrhona chocolate; distinctly port-like notes. Voluptuous and huge in the mouth, with explosive fruit bordering on confectionary; flavor of chocolate-covered currants. Much more powerfully structured than the estate second wine but the backbone is hidden under a tidal wave of lush fruit. Endless finish features extraordinarily fine, suave tannins. Like the ´97 Bryant Family Vineyard cabernet, this freakishly ripe wine reminds me of a great ´47 Pomerol. - Stephen Tanzer.

96 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this wine clearly has two sides to its personality. One can be at a minimum, marked by VA, others can be destroyed by VA. There are other times when the wine can provide stunning levels of pleasure. Fortunately for us, one of the good bottles decided to show up. Powerful, sweet, lush, rich, velvety, silky and rich, the fruit is ripe, fresh, clean and sweet. The finish is long, pure and generous."

90 THE WINEADVOCATE: "Here we go. This is pure Napa on the nose: rich black fruits, raspberry, mulberry, a touch of black olive and a hefty dose of new oak. The palate is admittedly well balanced with a firm, dense structure, very opulent with layers of toasty black fruit, touches of cassis and even a touch of turmeric towards the slightly savoury finish, but I find little in the way of tension, crispness or freshness. This Cabernet expends a great deal of effort in impressing, but to me it’s like joining the dots rather than painting a picture. Drink now-2018. Tasted June 2010." Drink: 2011 - 2018. -Neal Martin.
