Der Dominus von Christian Moueix ist die Bordeaux-Interpretation eines Napa Valley Weins schlechthin. Nicht nur aufgrund des Besitzers von Dominus, Christian Moueix, der als Inhaber von Chateau Trotanoy, Chateau Lafleur Petrus und vormals Chateau Petrus seine Wurzeln in Bordeaux hat. Die etwa 50 Hektar am westlichen Taleingang des Napa Valley gelegen sorgten unter dem Etikett Inglenook Anfang des 20.Jahrhunderts bereits Jahrzehnte lang für Furore. Hier entstanden unglaublich langlebige Weinlegenden. Somit hat dieses Terroir Weingeschichte geschrieben, bereits seit etwa 1850 nämlich wurde hier im Inglenook Vineyard Wein kultiviert. Christian Moueix kam 1968 nach Kalifornien, studierte an der berühmten UC Davins Weinbau und formte im Jahr 1982 mit Robin Lail und Marcia Smith, Tochter des berühmten Weinmakers John Daniels das Weingut Dominus. 1983 wurde der erste Wein produziert. Unter Leitung der berühmten Architekten Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron wurde in der Folge eine sensationelle Winery gebaut. Die Verblendung und Teile der tragenden Struktur wurden aus mit Lavastein gefüllten Drahtkörben erstellt. Eine bis dato einzigartige Struktur, die sowohl von innen als auch von außen beeindruckende Lichteffekte erzeugt. Mit dem Jahrgang 1995 schließlich wurde Christian Moueix alleiniger Eigentümer dieser Napa-Kultstätte. Dominus zählt zum Besten und Feinsten, was das Napa Valley zu bieten hat.

Dominus 1992
Der Dominus 1992 präsentiert sich mit einem kräftigen Karmingranat und breitem Ockerrand im Glas. In der vielschichtigen Nase entfalten sich zart karamellige, gereifte Aromen, ergänzt durch ätherische Nuancen, frische Minze und Zitruszesten. Am Gaumen begeistert dieser Napa-Wein mit einer harmonischen Verbindung aus lebendiger Frucht und einer geschmeidigen, expansiven Textur. Saftige, schokoladige Noten treffen auf robuste Tannine und dunkle Beerenfrucht. Der Abgang präsentiert sich mit Nougat-Anklängen, bleibt dabei präzise und fruchtig. Ein außergewöhnlich konzentrierter Wein mit erdigen Cassis-Noten, die sich mit Anklängen von Kräutern, Kaffee und Schokolade verflechten.

The Wine Advocate: "This spectacularly complex, rich wine magically combines the finest elements of Napa Valley (strength, ripeness, and full body) with those of Bordeaux (finesse, elegance, and complexity). The opaque dark ruby/purple color suggests considerable intensity, low yields, and great richness. A huge, soaring bouquet offers aromas of cassis, black-cherries, subtle herbs, vanillin, and spices. This full-bodied, voluptuously-textured, super-concentrated, multi-dimensional wine is more flattering and opulent that previous Dominus vintages, which tended to be tannic as well as rich. Although approachable and already complex (I have already consumed three bottles), the magnificent 1990 Dominus should evolve gracefully for 20-30 years. The 1990 is the finest wine Christian Moueix and his partners, Robin Lail and Marci Smith, have produced, although the 1991, which will be released in a year, may even eclipse the 1990!"

Both are brilliant wines and they represent the finest back-to-back vintages for Dominus since 2001 and 2002 or 1990 and 1991. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for 25-30 years."

The Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Dominus, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, tips the scales at 14.2% alcohol. Although this offering lacks the power, intensity, and compelling characteristics of the 1991 and 1994, it is not far off the pace of those two monumental wines. A super nose of roasted coffee, chocolate, dried herbs, black fruits and kirsch is both intense and persuasive. The wine displays terrific richness, medium to full body, low acidity, a succulent, opulent texture, and superb purity. This beautifully made 1996 is one of the few wines that has successfully tamed the vintage's elevated tannin level. It should be relatively drinkable upon its release, yet evolve nicely for two decades. Impressive!"

The Wine Advocate: "This 2002 was virtually perfect when I tasted it in early May. Even better than I predicted seven years ago, this 4,500-case blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot has blossomed beautifully, revealing even greater intensity and potential than I predicted. A flawless, seamless integration of tannin, wood, alcohol and acidity is found in this dense, plum/purple-colored Dominus, along with copious notes of sweet black currants interwoven with kirsch, forest floor, unsmoked cigar tobacco, new saddle leather and forest floor. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, stunning elegance and a 45-second finish, this sensational 2002 rivals two of the all-time great wines made at Dominus, 1991 and 1994. It is hard to believe that proprietor Christian Moueix’s Dominus Estate has already celebrated its 25th anniversary and is moving toward 30 years with the 2012-2013 vintages. The 2002 will drink well for another 20 years."

The Wine Advocate: "Like so many 2004s, the 2004 Dominus is a full-bodied wine showing brilliantly at age ten, with loads of complex cedar, kirsch, Christmas fruitcake, black currants and spice box. It has a creamy, opulent texture, but remains light on its feet. This sexy wine is showing exceptionally well and is best drunk over the next 10-15 years. Not one of the longest-lived wines from Dominus, but it is certainly at a wonderful point in its evolution right now."

The Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Dominus is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot (14.1% alcohol). Remarkably, it is the 20th vintage for Christian Moueix. Always a Bordeaux-inspired wine with restraint yet substance as well as a textured richness, the 2003 exhibits a deep plum/ruby/purple color, a creamy, opulent texture, no hard edges, and a wonderful sweetness of foresty, black currant and cherry fruit mixed with underbrush and hints of Chinese black tea. Well-proportioned and full-bodied, yet never over-stated or out of balance, this is another beauty from Moueix. Drink it over the next 15+ years."

Decanter: "The 1995 Dominus is very much cut from the same cloth as the 1994, with a deep bouquet of baked black cherry, cassis, truffle and rich loamy soil, and a full-bodied, powerful and rather old-school palate impression. As in the 1994, there is just a touch of torrefection in the fruit tones here which the Dominus team have worked hard to avoid in more recent vintages, but this is a very compelling wine which certainly does nod towards Libourne."

The Wine Advocate: "This blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (note that rarely is any Merlot utilized at the historic Napanook Estate in Yountville). The alcohol, by California standards, is a relatively modest 14.1%. Blending the best of French savoir faire with the brilliant fruit purity and ripeness of Napa Valley, Moueix has turned in another tour de force that seems far superior today than it did when it was first released. This is one of the vintage’s greatest wines. Dense purple and youthful, with a glorious nose of earth, blackcurrants, sweet black cherries and incense, the oak is pushed way in the background, as it is in all of the Moueix wines, and the result is a wine of terroir, of great originality and authenticity. This full-bodied classic from Dominus can be drunk now, but really won’t hit its prime for another 4-5 years and last at least another two decades or more."
