The Wine Advocate: The bottled 2020 Pingus has settled, and the strong Mediterranean accent that was quite strong early on seems to have calmed down. The wine shows more of the serious Pingus character and is harmonious, balanced and elegant, perhaps because of the time it spent in oak vat (starting this year, it is not only in barrique). It feels very complete and intense but without weight or heaviness, and the fruit shows very clean and focused. Peter Sisseck compared it with the 2000, a wine that for him transcends the vintage; it showcases the balance (wines like 1996, 2000, 2012, 2016 and 2018). The quality of the tannins is stunning, which make the wine very elegant and balanced, and it has good freshness (even some red fruit!). This is exceptionally good, but somehow my heart didn't beat like with the wines he compared them with... 7,500 bottles were filled in July 2022.

Almaviva 2020 Dieser beeindruckende Rotwein aus Chile präsentiert sich in einem tiefdunklen Rubingranat mit violetten Reflexen. Die komplexe Nase verzaubert mit einer Symphonie aus schwarzen Beeren, Cassis und reifen Kirschen, während feine Nuancen von Vanille, Zimt und Nougat das Bouquet ergänzen. Am Gaumen entfaltet sich eine kraftvolle, dennoch harmonische Struktur mit seidigen, gut eingebundenen Tanninen. Trotz seiner Jugend zeigt der 2020er bereits eine bemerkenswerte Balance zwischen dezenter Fruchtsüße und eleganter Würze. Noten von Trockenkräutern, Kardamom und subtilen Röstaromen vermählen sich mit saftigem Cassis und Brombeeren, gefolgt von einem langanhaltenden, geschmeidigen Abgang.

The Wine Advocate: The 2020 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Croichots Blanc is another best-ever from Lorenzon in this vintage. Exhibiting aromas of crisp Anjou pear, beeswax, freshly baked bread and fresh hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with racy acids, striking intensity and a long, saline finish. This is often one of the more outgoing, demonstrative wines in the range, but with the 2020 vintage, Lorenzon has attained a new level of refinement and elegance."

Decanter: Impressive concentration of blackberry and plum fruit, with a strong saline, mineral cast; at this point there is still a bit of reduction as well. On the palate, the wine is tightly wound and seriously tannic, with the concentration to age for decades. An extraordinary wine at the premier cru level. A tiny triangle that touches both Mazis-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin provides the fruit for this delicious wine. The grapes are planted on stakes ('en echalas') in very little soil, and the fruit is fermented largely as whole-cluster and regularly punched down."

The Wine Advocate: The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle has once again turned out especially well this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark wild berries, licorice, lilac blossom and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, ample and layered, with terrific concentration, lively acids and beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish."

Decanter: Deep raspberry fruit, with a floral edge, the balance between the rewarding density and fresh acidity ensures that the wine is not heavy at all. Marvellous. Dugat-Py has 3ha of village Gevrey and most of the vines are very old - the average age is 50 years of age, although the oldest is 110. There is a hectare of 80-year-old vines in Les Epointeurs, a half-hectare in Combes de Dessus and a half-hectare in Les Marchais amongst others."

The Wine Advocate: Offering up aromas of cherries, sweet berries, petals, vine smoke and spices, the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, its fleshy core of fruit underpinned by sweet tannins and tangy acids. This is a superb effort for what is on paper one of the domaine's "entry level" bottlings."

Decanter: Dugat-Py used almost 90% whole clusters in the fermentation in 2020, but the wine has no rustic edges, and the focus remains on the finesse and depth of the ripe plummy fruit accented with mineral notes plus a hint of violets. The wine is concentrated, complex and long, yet it retains a consummate elegance despite the power. Dugat-Py produces one of the rarest bottlings of Chambertin, but it is certainly worth seeking out. The wine is produced from a tiny 0.05ha plot of vines planted in 1910 near the top of the slope."

Decanter: A massive wine with black fruit and an imposing structure, plenty of depth, and impressive persistence on the palate. Although this is muscular, it is perfectly balanced. The Mazoyères from Dugat-Py is unlike any other. Loïc Dugat-Py explains that the soil in his quarter-hectare parcel of Mazoyères has larger pebbles than the parcel of Charmes just 100m distant."

The Wine Advocate: The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux wafts from the glass with aromas of rose petals, bergamot, plums, berries, espresso roast and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and enveloping, it's one of the most elegant, sensual wine in the range, with lively acids and beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a mouthwatering finish."

Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves Tres 2020 Ein facettenreicher Burgunder, der sich zunächst zurückhaltend präsentiert und erst nach beherztem Schwenken des Glases sein volles Bouquet entfaltet. In der Nase offenbaren sich verführerische Aromen von pochierter Pflaume, schwarzer Himbeere und einem Hauch von Veilchen, untermalt von feinen Anisklängen. Am Gaumen begeistert der Wein mit seiner geschmeidigen, liebkosenden Textur und saftigem Körper, während die schwarzbeerigen Fruchtaromen von einer feinen Würzkomponente begleitet werden. Der beeindruckend lange Abgang zeigt fokussierte Kraft und Eleganz. Die samtigen Tannine und die lebendige Säurestruktur verleihen diesem Premier Cru eine harmonische Balance und beachtliche Tiefe.

Riesling Ried Loibenberg Der 2020er präsentiert sich in strahlendem Gelbgrün mit eleganten Silberreflexen. Sein verführerisches Bouquet entfaltet zarte weiße Blüten, reife Pfirsichnoten und exotische Nuancen von Maracuja und Limette. Am Gaumen begeistert er mit komplexem Zusammenspiel aus saftiger Frucht, konzentrierter Kraft und lebendiger Frische. Die intensiven Aromen von Ananas und Orangenschale, unterlegt mit einem Hauch von Minze, gleiten über die tiefe Frucht. Seine dichte, kraftvolle Struktur verbindet sich harmonisch mit einem seidigen Mundgefühl und einem beeindruckend langen, erfrischenden Abgang, der die außergewöhnliche Qualität dieses Weins unterstreicht.

Decanter: The wine has a lovely, ripe dark plum and cassis fruit, and a firm, tannic texture. The finish sports what the French are calling 'beaux amers’ (beautiful bitterness) which adds complexity. This should age well. With Thierry’s son Joannès taking over the winemaking, this Clos des Mouches is now 100% whole-cluster, punched down twice daily. The wine is aged with a moderate amount of new oak to produce this Beaune with guts."

Decanter: The wine has an intensely ripe, inky, black plum fruit, with notes of spice and an element of ground coffee. The texture is firm, with plenty of tannic grip, but there is generosity and silkiness as well. Lovely and very well done; among the top wines in the cellar. The domaine has 0.25ha of 70-year-old vines in Les Petits Epenots, although it is labeled simply Epenots (as many do). This is fermented entirely as whole clusters after a cold soak and aged in 45% new casks."

Decanter: Shows a ripe raspberry fruit, with a menthol edge, firm tannins, fresh acidity and plenty of extract. This should drink within a few years and make a wonderful wine for mid-term cellaring. This south-facing parcel of 0.7ha was originally planted in 1936 although 20% was replanted in 1982. Despite the aspect it is fairly late-ripening. 60% of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters and the wine is aged in 45% new casks."

Weinwisser: Dieser Ornellaia besticht schon im Duft mit einem eher puristischen, «luscious» Bouquet - wieder eher im eleganten Bordeaux-Style anstatt wie früher mit «kalifornischen» Allüren. Dabei bleibt er seiner extrem würzig-ätherischen, durchaus mediterranen Ader treu, also ein typischer Ornellaia der moderneren Jahre. Die klare Frucht changiert von rot- bis blaubeerig, untermalt von einer wunderbaren rauchig-tabakigen Graphitnote, dahinter auch zimtwürzige Anklänge und Sandelholz. Eleganter Gaumen mit linearer Ausrichtung, gute Tiefenstaffelung, eher elegant als konzentriert, viel tabakige Würze, noch ganz zarte BSA-Noten, ruhig und präzise, engmaschig gewoben, extrem feinkonturiertes Finale mit festem Tanningriff. Beeindruckendes Finish, total auf Eleganz aus. Bravo!"

NEIPPERG In der Nase Zitrone, grüner Apfel und weiße Blumen. Am Gaumen sehr saftig, mit Noten von reifer Zitrone, Stachelbeere, Mandarine und schöner Mineralik und Komplexität verleihenden Terroirnoten. Perfekte Säure, die diesem Wein guten Zug und Frische verleiht, alles ganz dezent untermalt von einer feinen Holznote. Ein toller Sauvignon Blanc, der gut gekühlt jetzt so richtig Spaß macht, bevor man zum gegrillten T-Bone die roten NEIPPERGs aus dem Keller holt. Ganz egal übrigens, ob solo oder als Aperitiv in der Abendsonne, mit diesem NEIPPERG sind Sie bestens angezogen.

James Suckling: Pretty nose of apricots, lime pith, green mangoes and wet stones. It’s medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a mineral, pithy palate. Refreshing finish. Drink now."

Weinwisser: Im Duft sehr tiefgründig und füllig, ganz klar, transparent und aufreizend, obwohl sich das Geruchsbild noch in einer eher verschlossenen Phase befindet. Im Mund zeigt er sich bereits etwas mehr geöffnet, mit viel Saft und haptischer Cremigkeit, enorm kernig und weit gefächert, mit extraktreicher Saftigkeit und wuchtiger Fülle. Sein spannungsgeladener Säurezug ist mit bebender Zitrus-Würze angereichert. Dabei wirkt er dennoch etwas leichtfüßiger als sonst, extrem spielerisch und animierend."

James Suckling: Still tight and rather closed on the nose, but on the palate there’s a real explosion of citrus fruit (bergamot and pomelo), then you land in a deep pool of minerality that’s totally fascinating. From biodynamically grown grapes."
