"The 2020 Château Cantenac Brown showed beautifully and is a serious, concentrated, powerful Margaux that's going to need bottle age. Ripe blackcurrants, toasty oak, ripe tobacco, and dried flower notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, balanced mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more focused, slightly understated style of the vintage, yet everything is in the right place, it has terrific purity, and it’s just a brilliant Margaux. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it never put a foot wrong. It will hit its prime drinking window in 7-8 years and evolve for two decades."

Concluding with a long, penetrating finish, it underlines the fact that this is the appellation's fastest-improving estate."

"Juicy, succulent and supple, this has lovely bright energy and impact straight away. Tannins are on the chalky mineral side, mouthcoating, but with a salty tang so they don't appear too ripe, heavy or rustic, but give width and structure. Feels quite powerful, with an underlying concentration and a tight clove and cedar tang to the tannins. Energetic, definitely more bright and pulsing right now. Purity of fruit is there, as is the acidity."

Chateau Cantenac Brown

Chateau Cantenac Brown ist architektonisch einzigartig in der gesamten Appellation Bordeaux. Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts erwarb der bekannte schottische Maler John Lewis Brown das Anwesen und ließ ein markantes Schloss im englischen Tudor Stil errichten und benannte er das Anwesen in Cantenac Brown um. Heute umgeben das Schloss ca. 5 Hektar parkähnliche Landschaft mit atemberaubenden Grünanlagen und Seen mit Schwänen und eigenen Bienenstöcken. Im Laufe der Zeit ging das Chateau durch mehrere Hände, unter anderem 1989 an die AXA Gruppe, die es einerseits für repräsentative Zwecke nutzte aber auch unter der Ägide von Jean- Michael Cazes in den Weinbaus investierte um das Chateau qualitativ in die obere Liga in Margaux zu führen. 2006 wurde das Chateau dann an die Familie Halabi verkauft, die mit der Wahl für Jose Sanfins als neuen Winemaker eine glückliche Hand bewies, unter seiner Führung hat sich das Qualitätsniveau weiter verbessert. Sein Talent erkannte auch der seit 2019 neue Besitzer Tristan Le Lous von der Urgo Group, der weiterhin auf ihn setzt. Le Lous´ Familie verdiente ihr Geld in der Pharmabranche und investiert große Summen in die Modernisierung, allen voran in den Bau eines neuen, komplett nachhaltig gestalteten umweltbewussten Keller, der aus roher Erde und Holz, ganz ohne Einsatz von Zement entsteht. Le Lous kaufte zudem weitere 9,5 Hektar von den benachbarten Chateaux La Galiane und Charmant hinzu und erhöhte die Rebfläche, die sich auf hervorragendem Terroir befindet, auf knapp 60 Hektar, die zu 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot und 5% Cabernet Franc bestockt sind und ökologisch nachhaltig bewirtschaftet werden. Die Lese und auch Vinifikation erfolgt parzellenweise erst in temperaturkontrollierten Edelstahltanks und danach je nach Jahrgang für 12 bis 15 Monate in französischen Eichenfässern. /217
