It was bottled unfined and unfiltered and came in with natural alcohols of 14%. The low acidity, plush fruit and silky tannins all suggest drinking this over the next decade. "One of those hidden little gem estates, the 2009 Château Charmail is a more Merlot-dominated red that includes 47% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Despite being a big, ripe, sexy beauty of a wine, it has a remarkable sense of freshness and purity, and it only gains in stature with time in the glass. Offering lovely notes of red and black currants, chocolate, tobacco leaf, earth, and truffle, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Don't be afraid to give well-stored bottles plenty of air. This awesome little Margaux will continue evolving gracefully for another 10-15 years."

Chateau Charmail

Chateau Charmail, dessen Ursprünge bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurückreichen, hat eine außergewöhnlich schöne Lage in der Appellation Haut Medoc, in der Nähe von Sociando Mallet. Es liegt mit seiner 27,5 ha komplett zusammenhängender Anbaufläche an einem nach Süden ausgerichteten Hang der bis zum Ufer der Gironde reicht. Bernard d’Halluin, seit 2008 zusammen mit seiner Tochter Marie Besitzer von Chateau Charmail, brachte es auf den Punkt „Ein Ozean von Weinreben, die in den Fluss fließen. Es ist ein unglaubliches Spektakel! “ Zu respektabler Reputation kam das Gut im Jahre 1982 mit dem Einstieg von Olivier Seze, der über mehr als 30 Jahre lang traumhafte Preis/Leistungsweine vinifizierte. Er fungiert nach wie als Direktor des Gutes und führt seine erfolgreiche Arbeit nach dem Verkauf an Bernard d’Halluin weiter. Seit dieser Zusammenarbeit wurden neue Gebäude in Betrieb genommen und weitere 6 ha Anbaufläche erworben, so dass sich die Reben inzwischen auf 48 % Merlot, 30 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Cabernet Franc und 2 % Petit Verdot aufteilen. Die Weine von Chateau Charmail sind stark geprägt vom hier perfekte Bedingungen vofindenden Merlot, die Reifung für 12 Monate in Eichenfässern, von denen ca. ein Drittel jährlich erneuert werden, führt zu unglaublich charmanten Weinen, die zudem über erhebliches Alterungspotential verfügen. /213
