I tasted three different components of the 2018 Chateau Grillet. First, from the top of the property, a round, lush, silky, long wine (94 - 96). Second, from just behind the château, a more exotic, tropical barrel that was almost kinky in its restraint, full-bodied, rich and long (96 - 98). Finally, a barrel from an adjacent parcel (also mid-slope) that shows less opulence but even more power, structure and length (97 - 99). This should prove to be another great Chateau Grillet."
Definitely more expressive on the nose than the Côtes du Rhône. Hint of ginger and lots of blossom. Cooler (no obvious alcohol) on the end. Sleek and fresh. Lightly saline finish. Quite reserved. Interesting texture."
A little-known Côtes de Rhone from Ch Grillet, introduced because of stricter selection of grapes going into the main estate blend (something that has been happening since 2011, the year of purchase by Artemis), with this coming from a 3.5ha plot that they feel doesn't give the same complexity. The biggest difference that you find in the wine is more Viognier typicity, so you get a burst of juicy apricot backed up by rich citrus. A lovely wine with clear emphasis on well-controlled fruit and full of pleasure."
