MARK AUBERT, Schüler der begnadeten Weinmacherin Helen Turley, danach selbst verantwortlich für große Weine von Peter Michael, Colgin, Bryant und vielen anderen, gründete Ende der 90er Jahre sein eigenes Weingut AUBERT.
Was dann passierte sieht man in dieser Dimension normalerweise nur in der IT-Branche: MARK AUBERT eilte v.a. mit seines Chardonnays von einem Erfolg zum nächsten. PARKER schrieb Ende 2016 über MARK AUBERT: „…Aubert is at the top of his game, and it is hard to believe any Chardonnay winemaker in the world is turning out a half-dozen Chardonnays at this qualitative level year in and year out. He has had an incredible run of great success…”. Die Anfragen nach Consulting überschlugen sich. Durch seine Reputation und seinen Namen eröffneten sich ihm Zugänge zu Traubenmaterial aus den Tops der Tops aller CHARDONNAY Weinberge Kaliforniens. Ob Hudson, Hyde & Sons, oder Eastside, aus all diesen Weinbergen erhält er mittlerweile Zuteilungen. Ein Weinberg jedoch tat es ihm von Anfang an besonders an: RITCHIE VINEYARD. Anfang der 70er Jahre mit dem berühmten Wente Clone bepflanzt, entstanden aus dieser Lage viele grandiose Weine namhafter Spitzenwinzer. Erstmalig mit dem Jahrgang 2000 gelang es MARK AUBERT Traubenmaterial aus diesem historischen Weinberg zu erhalten. Und seitdem sind die Bewertungen auf konstantem Mega-Niveau, die Nachfrage nach den wenig hundert Kisten immens.

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "A relatively new vineyard label for Aubert (the third vintage to be produced), the 2019 Chardonnay Powder House comes from eight acres of what are now estate-owned vines planted in 2013 to Hyde Old Wente and Mt. Eden clones on Goldridge soils. It prances out of the glass with showy scents of fresh nectarines, pink grapefruit, lime leaves and preserved lemons plus hints of struck flint and wet pebbles. The full-bodied palate possesses an almost electric intensity with bags of nervy citrusy flavors and a very lively backbone, finishing with great length and oodles of minerals. This should age fantastically!"

THE WINE ADVOCATE: Aubert noted that this is his coolest site and usually the last to be harvested. Located near the Hyde Estate winery, by virtue of chilly afternoon breezes, it is indeed among the coolest sites on the Napa side of the Los Carneros AVA. This section is planted to Corton-Charlemagne clone on St. George rootstock. A barrel sample, it is being aged in 50% new French oak barrels.
Whoa—the 2019 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons explodes from the glass with bombastic scents of sea spray, freshly shaved ginger, lemon curd and grapefruit plus emerging hints of green guava, lime cordial and coriander seed with a waft of struck flint. Full-bodied, rich and lively, the palate is remarkably fruity and yet possesses loads of mineral sparks and savory nuances, finishing very long and spicy. This vintage no doubt played to the strengths of this site beautifully in 2019, delivering a very impressive wine of amazing singularity and intensity.

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "A barrel sample, the 2019 Chardonnay Eastside sails out of the glass with zesty citrus scents of lemons, kaffir lime leaves and mandarin peel with an underlying jasmine perfume and a waft of blanched almonds. The palate is tightly wound and very finely knit, delivering loads of nuanced layers and a crisp backbone, finishing long and steely.
Eastside is a warmer site in Russian River, composed of very rocky, gravelly soils, forcing the vines to really struggle. It is planted to Montrachet clone. Aubert usually harvests this second, after Sugar Shack.- Lisa Perrotti-Brown."

Unlike the other 2019 Aubert Chardonnays, this one needs a little swirling and coaxing to reveal the youthfully mute nuances of sea spray, crushed cashews, beeswax and allspice over a core of fresh pineapple, passion fruit, lemon meringue pie and toast. The full-bodied palate delivers the most gorgeous silken texture with tons of opulent spice-laced tropical fruit flavors and a refreshing line, finishing with incredible length and energy. LISA PERROTTI-BROWN: "The 2020 Chardonnay Park Avenue comes galloping out of the glass with energetic notes of mandarin peel, Golden Delicious apples, honeysuckle, and toasted almonds, plus suggestions of lime zest, powdered ginger, and wet slate. The full-bodied palate delivers a rock-solid structure of racy acidity and creamy texture, supporting the muscular layers of citrus and spice flavors, finishing with incredible length and depth. Aubert bought this vineyard in 2013. It’s located right in between the Lauren and CIX vineyards. A neighbor who owned these 12 acres next to Lauren, previously planted with apples, passed away. There is a long road leading up to the vineyard, hence the name Park Avenue. This is mainly Hyde Clone with a little bit of Montrachet on 101-14 and 420A rootstocks."

LISA PERROTTI-BROWN: "The 2020 Chardonnay CIX Estate comes bounding out of the glass with youthful notes of fresh lemons and lime, grapefruit oil, and chalk dust, with wafts of paraffin wax, lily of the valley, and wet pebbles. The palate is full-on full-bodied and fantastically textured, with viscous ripples of flavor and seamless acidity, finishing with a lingering spicy kick. CIX stands for 109 because this was called “parcel 109” when they bought it. Planted in 2008 to the Montrachet clone, the berries accumulate flavor very slowly here."

LISA PERROTTI-BROWN: "The 2020 Chardonnay Powder House rockets out with powerful notes of key lime pie, jasmine tea, and candied orange peel, plus notes of oyster shell, nutmeg, fresh ginger, and citron blossom. The full-bodied palate is viscous and opulent with layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, lifted by a refreshing backbone, finishing long with loads of mineral nuances. This vineyard, on Goldridge soils near downtown Forestville, was planted in 2013. There are basically 2 clones, Hyde and Mt Eden, on 420 A & 114 rootstocks, and the row direction is due north."

The full-bodied palate shimmers with energy, framed by a racy backbone and creamy texture, finishing with epic length and a whole firework display of citrus sparks. This comes from two blocks, first planted in 2006 with the Corton Charlemagne clone of St Georges rootstock. This is one of the last vineyards to be harvested, hence a long hang-time."
