Sampled during a vertical tasting of 2008-2021 vintages in August 2024. Dark ruby colour. It is an incredibly robust and textural wine with tons of grip and freshness brought on by stone fruit notes of peach pit, plums, and a freshness of white pepper and mocha. Densley-packed fine-grained tannins imbue this wine with serious weight, while that stone fruit and acid grip help keep everything light, fresh, and almost airy. The finish is exceedingly long, with saline minerals and a real high-toned spicy jalapeño note. The winery is in Capalbio, in the Tuscan Maremma, about a mile from the sea as the crow flies. The estate harbours 24.28 hectares of vines on eroded stony soils, much like the round river rocks of the Rhône Valley. The in-house winemaker is Matthieu Taunay, and Jean Hoefliger has served as a consultant since 2008, the first vintage. The winery is a state-of-the-art facility, allowing for stainless steel, concrete egg, and barrel fermentation. The blend for Monteverro always leads with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wines are half barrel fermented and half stainless steel fermented with roughly 70-80% new French oak for 24 months, with native yeast leading the way. The blend here includes 10% Petit Verdot."
2016 war ein fast perfektes Vegetationsjahr. Während der Wintermonate gab es einige Niederschläge, es folgte ein relativ warmer Frühling, der für eine wunderbare Blüte und dementsprechend guten Fruchtansatz sorgte. Der erste starke Regen (75 mm) am 10. Juni konnte den stabilisierten und kräftigen Trauben nichts anhaben, füllte aber vor den Sommermonaten die Wasserreserven. Im Juli und August war es heiß, aber nicht so extrem wie in 2015. Zeigte sich in der Nachverkostung dem idealen Trinkfenster nahe. Duft und Aromatik wie bereits in der Jugend, nur deutlich offener. Komplexes Bouquet mit eher blauen und dunklen Beeren, feiner Mineralik mit Noten von Graphit und Eisen. Im Mund enorm druckvoll und dennoch auch sehr geschmeidig und linear. Erinnert mit seiner Rasse und Frische an die an die jüngeren Figeac-Jahrgänge. Ein großer Maremma Grand Cru, der erst langsam ins Trinkfenster kommt und noch lange sein Potenzial ausschöpfen wird."
Monteverro always delivers excellent results, and this is more true than ever in this balanced and classic vintage. Although the 2016 Monteverro is never a terribly territory-driven wine (it's hard to place it from Capalbio, Tuscany, per se), it is a beautifully executed rendition based on a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The bouquet is rich and multidimensional with dark fruit, plum cake, sweet tobacco and sweet baking spice. It is tight and well-assembled, with lasting intensity, yet its power is ultimately reined in by an elegant personality. I tasted bottle 3,121 of 17,929 made."

The star of the lineup is the 2016 Monteverro (60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc). Deep purple-hued, with stunning notes of cassis, dried violets, and toasted spice, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, good acidity, and ripe tannins. It’s showing plenty of oak at the moment, but it has more than enough fruit. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15-20 years."
