85 % Merlot, 15 % Cabernet Franc.

Coming from the southern edge of the appellation, not far from Cheval Blanc and Figeac in Saint-Emilion, the 2022 Château Bourgneuf is deep ruby/plum-hued and has a ripe, powerful style in its darker currants, chocolaty oak, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. A big, rich, layered Pomerol that fills the mouth with fruit, it has terrific overall balance, a lush, opulent style, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and will see its 20th birthday in fine form. It's a beautiful, rich, fruit-loaded beauty based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc."

  • Falstaff

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Brombeerkonfit, reife Pflaumen, kandierte Orangenzesten, etwas Nugat. Stoffig, kraftvoll, reife Zwetschken, feiner Säurebogen, extraktsüßer Abgang, zeigt Länge und Frische, sicheres Reifepotenzial."

  • Decanter

Ripe dark fruit with a dusting of tobacco and cocoa powder on the nose. Strong and wide in the mouth, this has plenty of kick and power underpinned by a cool menthol element as well as spiced cedar, liquorice and aniseed. It's a little potent at this stage with some heat on the finish. Intense but well built, this will need a few years to soften."

  • James Suckling

A purity of blackberry and blueberry fruit with flowers too. Medium- to full-bodied, this has soft and velvety tannins and a succulent finish. Fruit-forward yet the framed tannins give it tension. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Drink after 2028."

  • Wine Spectator

Alluring dark plum and warmed blackberry puree flavors cruise through, inlaid with dried anise, iris and warm earth accents. There's a flicker of smoldering savory on the finish. Stylish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2040. 1,700 cases made, 150 cases imported."

  • Wine Enthusiast

A classic blend of mainly Merlot (with Cabernet Franc) has produced a satisfying wine. Its structure is masked by black fruits but is certainly there for the future."

  • The Wine Cellar Insider

The wine is long, intense, medium-bodied, silky, and fresh. It showcases a vibrancy in the chocolate-dipped fruits, enhanced by notes of spice, orange rind, and espresso on the nose, palate, and in the lush, energetic finish. The wine blends 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2040."

  • The Wine Advocate

The 2022 Bourgneuf has turned out well in bottle, offering up a rich, lavish bouquet of dark berries, berry preserve, licorice and black truffle. Medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, it's textural and enveloping, with good energy and plenty of sweet, powdery tannins. As readers will remember, this estate boasts nine hectares of holdings situated below Trotanoy, characterized by clay-rich gravels."

Extremely well placed on grave and clay soils, very powerful, This is an estate that I love to recommend, flies under the radar and yet so consistent - if a little super charged in this vintage. It's silky with muscular tannins, sage and rosemary spice, touch of soy and red pepper, clear personality. Vayron family, 9ha, early harvest September 5 to 15 and yet still this has climbed to 15.5, reflecting the intense conditions of the vintage."

  • Jancis Robinson

Deep crimson hue. Red-fruit fragrance. Rich and generous on the palate, the tannins ripe and smooth. Finishes chewy and dry, the oak not yet fully integrated."

  • Lisa Perrotti-Brown

From a midslope property in Pomerol, with a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, this presents a sweet and expressive nose suggestive of liquorice cake, with a lightly dehydrated character to the fruit, dried blackberry with notes of charcoal and toast, much of which suggests a little desiccation of the berries at harvest. This translates into a palate rich in crushed and concentrated black fruits, with a warm and peppery breadth, underpinned a lightly chalky frame of tannins. This feels sweet and compact, with a warm, dark and slightly spirity finish and length, with plenty of peppery tannin showing here. It is admirable, but the bottled wine shows a much bolder and more modern build than it did at the primeurs, and it will appeal most to fans of that style. The alcohol on the label is 15.5%."
