  • The Wine Cellar Insider

"Aromatically, the wine pops with incense, espresso, licorice, plums, cherries, flowers, and chocolate. However, the star of the show is the mineral-driven palate with its layers of perfectly ripe, fruits, and the velvet-edged, creamy finish, with its salt-crusted end note. Part of the reason the 2022 is so strong is that Le Defi was not produced this year. So all of that fruit was included in the Fontenil bottling. Drink from 2026-2042."

"Due to a devastating hailstorm, no Delfi will be produced this vintage, and yields are minuscule. However, the 2022 Château Fontenil from this remarkable winemaker is well worth seeking out. Loads of cassis, ripe black cherries, spicy wood, and savory, incense-like notes all define the aromatics, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a broad, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a gorgeous finish. All Merlot that was raised 18 months in just 30% new oak, this fabulous Fronsac can be enjoyed any time over the coming two decades or more. The 2022 hit 14% alcohol with a great pH of 3.68."

  • Falstaff

"Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Ripe plums, black cherries, some nougat, a shy bouquet. Juicy on the palate with ripe plums, some nougat, underpinned by vivid tannins, chocolatey finish, a wine with depth and a spicy food wine. Certain ageing potential."

  • James Suckling

"This firm and polished red has notes of dark chocolate, cedar, dark cherries and rosemary. It’s full-bodied, compact and framed, but creamy, too. Elegant cedar notes. Drink from 2027."

  • Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"From 10 hectares of Merlot vines farmed by the Rolland family, this presents an expressive although rather understated nose, the blackberry and currant fruits sitting beneath an upper layer of sandalwood and perfumed oak barrel. It has a sense of harmony, and this continues on the palate, which presents a coherent whole, with savoury peppered fruits, all blackberry, damson, liquorice and currant, with a wrapping of toasted sandalwood reflecting the character on the nose. It finishes with a flourish of tight and tannin which feels more precisely managed than some of its peers. Very primary, but this has surefire potential;give it ten years or more. The alcohol on the label is 14%."

  • Jane Anson

"Coffee bean and smoke on the first nose, beautiful deep ruby colour, plenty of limestone fingerprinting coming through, giving a mouthwatering lemongrass edge that helps balance out the dominating spice, tobacco and grilled red fruits. 30% new oak, home estate of Dany Rolland. Plenty of estate signature, a definite crowd pleaser."

  • Decanter

"Richly concentrated nose full of perfumed bramble fruits and wild flower scents. Full-bodied, deep and supple on the palate but it walks the path between lean and plush, giving a balanced overall weight and density. Cool blue fruits are joined by crushed stones giving refreshing elements while the sticky liquorice, dark chocolate and clove spice edge the finish. Well constructed, a little tense still and just constricting some of the easy enjoyment at this stage but lots of promise for future drinking pleasure. Harvest 8-17 September. Ageing in French oak, 30% new. Rolland & Associés consultants."

  • Wine Spectator

"Fresh and expressive, with cherry and red currant coulis notes entwined with light, chalky minerality and dried violet accents. Feels steady. Best from 2026 through 2033. 2,000 cases made."
