The 2009 Château La Dominique is a beauty, offering a ripe, plush, sexy, and full-bodied style that still has a terrific sense of purity and elegance. Notes of red and black currants, white truffle, lead pencil, and sous bois all emerge from this classic Saint-Emilion, which has ripe, sweet tannins, a great mid-palate, and the balance and class to continue evolving for another 10-15 years."
This sports a dark, roasted feel, as espresso and charcoal notes flank the core of tobacco and dark fig flavors. Has a burly edge now, but shows ample flesh through the finish. Should settle down in the cellar. Lots here. Best from 2014 through 2027. 8,330 cases made."
Secondary nuances of truffle, roses, licorice, cocoa and plums are impossible to avoid. And why would you want to? On the palate, the wine is silky, elegant, medium-bodied, soft, polished and refined. The sensuous finish feels great. You can definitely open this today. But if want to wait another 5 years for more truffle, that's also a good idea."
Finally we have returned to the great La Dominiques made in 1989 and 1990. This has much of the style of the 1990, with supple tannin and loads of spicy fruitcake, licorice, cassis and kirsch-like notes that jump from this dense ruby/purple wine. Fat, fleshy and full-bodied, with beautiful richness, purity and length, this wine will be approachable in its youth yet last for two decades."
These were the years where I struggled with the over-concentration in La Dominique, and tasting it at 15 years old underlines the progress that has been made at this property by the recent team.
