Chateau Pavie 2014

Wine Spectator: "This is juicy and fresh in feel despite the obvious heft, with a brambly note underneath the core of blueberry, açai and boysenberry fruit. Loads of licorice, bay, tobacco and black tea flavors fill in through the finish. A flashy display, but this has the cut and drive to pull it off.--Non-blind Pavie vertical (March 2017). The Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Pavie is clearly the star of Gérard Perse's portfolio this year. The aromatics are the most complex and absorbing, a mixture of red and black fruit, graphite and black truffle, a faint marine influence emerging as it unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and demonstrates less substance and glossiness than the Bellevue-Mondotte. In fact, if you had this blind you might describe it as a more "classic" Saint Emilion, underpinned by quite firm tannin that provide this with impressive backbone. There is a toughness to this Pavie, but it retains balance. It has its sights set on longevity and for that we will have to wait, but it will be worth it."

Wine Enthusiast: "This is a perfumed ripe wine, packed with generous tannins that still give a style and elegance that is a remove from the older overripe style of Pavie. It is balanced, complex and with great potential. The wood and the tannins are in harmony with the black fruits. With its structure, it will certainly age well. Drink from 2027."

James Suckling: "What a beautiful nose of forest berries and damson plums this youthful St.-Emilion has! The oak has already been absorbed. Great balance of richness, full fine tannins and subtly savory character on the bold and focused palate. Long, chocolatey finish. Drink or hold. Château Quintus vertical tasting. SP."

Weinwisser: "60 % Merlot, 22 % Cabernet Franc, 18 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 34 hl/ha. Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Das Bouquet beginnt sehr konzentriert, wirkt leicht trocken im Ansatz, die Aromen kommen erst im zweiten Anlauf etwas mehr aus dem Glas heraus. Nach dem wuchtigen Pavie-Decesse und Bellevue-Mondotte hatte ich mich auf einen kraftvollen Pavie eingestellt. Es scheint aber, dass er dann wohl doch eine Neigung zu einer gewissen Klassik haben wird. Nun zum Bouquet: reife rote Früchte, röstiges Edelholz, etwas Kaffee, darunter florale Züge von den beiden, Reife anzeigende Cabernets. Im Gaumen dicht, aber nicht komprimiert, viel Holundernoten, die Tannine wirken rund, verlangend, haben sich aber bereits etwas in den massiven Körper integriert. Es ist kein weicher Pavie, aber auch kein harter. Man hat hier den nicht einfachen Weg gesucht und durch rigorose Selektion auch gefunden. Ich traue ihm die nächsthöhere Punktezahl in 20 Jahren zu. Und diese Wertung braucht er eigentlich dann auch, um seinem aktuellen Preisniveau gerecht zu werden."

Decanter: "More to the British taste with the record amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Long and linear with plenty of freshness. Firmly structured but a touch more finesse than in the past. Saline note on the finish."

Falstaff: "Bukettreich: rote Paprika, schwarzer Pfeffer, rauchiges, zitrisches Holz. Am Gaumen mit opulentem Schmelz und einer milden Anmutung durch die zurückhaltende Säure (und eine Spur Süße?). Weiches, mürbes Tannin und ausladende Proportionen, eher defensiv wirkende Extraktfüllung. Guter mineralischer Hintergrund."
