  • Jeb Dunnuck

Deeper ruby-hued, the 2022 Château Rol Valentin checks in as 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Malbec, all of which spent 19 months in 40% new barrels. It's rock-solid stuff offering terrific notes of darker cherries, plums, spicy wood, and candied violet notes in a richer, medium to full-bodied, concentrated style. Made in a slightly more modern, well-oaked style, it's still pure Saint-Emilion goodness with notable minerality and ample character. Give bottles 4-5 years if you can and enjoy over the following 10-15 years."

  • Falstaff

Dunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Frische schwarze Kirschen, Brombeeren, etwas Lakritze, feine Edelholznote ist unterlegt. Saftig, reife Frucht, angenehme Süße, integrierte Tannine, gut strukturiert, Herzkirschen und salziger Touch im Abgang."

  • Wine Enthusiast

The wine's richness and spice dominate. There is a juicy edge and fine acidity that promise well."

  • The Wine Cellar Insider

Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, and fresh, the nose pops with its floral edge as soon as the wine hits your glass. On the palate, the wine delivers a creamy finish that hits the spot. Drink from 2026-2040."

  • James Suckling

Rich cherries, plums and touches of white pepper and iron on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm yet close-knit tannins enveloping the big core of ripe, juicy fruit. Pretty long and tight in the finish. Drink from 2027, when the wood spices and tannins are more resolved."

  • Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The fruit definition on the nose here is dark but feels a little diffuse, with smashed summer berries, layered with toast, black pepper and dark chocolate. The start of the palate is surprisingly juicy and fresh though, and comes laden with dark chocolate, liquorice, black pepper and dried currants, with a rich bed of spicy tannins wrapped all around, before a dark and tannin-washed finish. A richly built style, leaning towards the modern, although the dark and juicy elements on the palate are a delight, and the finish is long and convincing;on the whole I like it. Give it time to soak up those tannins though."

They have done a good job of injecting plenty of personality here, delivering sweet liquorice and mandarin peel flavour alongside bright redcurrant and raspberry fruits, clear spice, pumped up but with a foot on the brake. 90% new oak, 400l barrels and 10% in cement eggs, 7.14ha of old sand and clay limestone soils."

  • The Wine Advocate

A blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, the 2022 Rol Valentin offers up aromas of lilac, dark berries, cassis and mulberries mingled with delicate notes of licorice and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's rich and deep with a fleshy core of fruit and structured tannins that segue into a gently assertive tannic frame. It concludes with an oaky, spicy bouquet yet is notably less oaky than previous vintages, reflecting a refined approach to its barrel integration and extraction process. Matured for 19 months in 40% new and 60% one-year-old barrels."

  • Weinwisser

  • Decanter

Ripe blue fruit with prunes, figs and cherries on the nose alongside vanilla and chocolate. There's juiciness here but also quite filling tannins that just detract from an easy enjoyment. A touch massy with some dryness towards the finish giving toasted liquorice, chalky mint and tobacco. Feels like the oak is still quite evident so needs time to settle. It has high acidity but the tannins are too much right now. Bold and evocative. Newly classified as of 2022."

  • Jancis Robinson

Dark purplish crimson with smudgy rim. Dark-fruited and a little charry. Very ripe on the palate, just a little too ripe for freshness but the tannins help to balance the leathery ripeness of the fruit."
