"Chocolate, liquorice, olive tapendade, brambled blackberry and cassis fruits, firm tannins. Deepens through the palate, showcasing layers of flavour that offer both power and concentration. An excellent Poyferré that offsets the seriousness of the vintage with the signature exuberance and pleasure of the estate. Needs a carafe for a few hours as still pretty tight on opening. Harvest September 30 to October 18. 80% new oak."

"Sehr dunkles, tiefes Granat mit schwarzen Reflexen. Sehr tiefgründiges Bouquet, viel Tabak, Zedern und Lakritze, vor allem viel klassischer, grosser Cabernet. Viel direkte Frucht, fleischig, ausgeglichene Adstringenz, grosser Gaumenauftritt. Ein genialer, grosser Poyferré, der viel weniger kostet, als er eigentlich wert ist. Kann sogar noch zulegen."
- 93/100The Wine Advocate
"Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades."

"Revealing a healthy ruby hue with just a touch of lightening at the rim, the 2004 Château Léoville Poyferré offers some classic Saint-Julien elegance and finesse, with ripe currants, smoked tobacco, smoke, truffle, and chocolate-like nuances as well as a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, beautifully textured style on the palate. It brings terrific richness, has resolved, seamless tannins, and outstanding length."
- 93/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2004 Leoville Poyferre is deep garnet-brick in color. It leaps from the glass with notes of rusty nails, unsmoked cigars, and leather, leading to a core of dried cranberries and redcurrants, plus a waft of bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate has a refreshing backbone and chewy tannins, with mature, savory flavors and a ferrous finish."
- 93/100Wine Enthusiast
"A powerfully extracted wine, which almost—but not quite—submerges what is a fresh, fruity layer. The new wood that goes with the extraction is obvious at this stage in the wine's development, but that cassis fruit will bring out the freshness later."
- 92/100Decanter
"Clear leather and autumnal hedgerow aromatics, showcasing soft bramble fruits and full of life and character. After a slow start, the 2004 vintage is starting to stretch its wings and show some real character. This is a wine that surpasses its vintage, as you might expect from the producer. It was an abundant vintage with high yields, which perhaps explain why it is showing the beginning of tertiary character and less concentration to the fruit, but no doubt it will stay put at this moment of evolution for a long while."
- 91/100The Wine Cellar Insider
"Clearly, this is ready to go. It is a soft, easy to like and drink, open, medium-bodied, cherry-filled wine without a lot of depth or complexity or weight. However, there is charm along with touch of herbs and underripeness accompanying the red berry-filled finish."
- 90/100Wine Spectator
"Very clean, with blackberry, currant and light vanilla aromas. Full and juicy, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Impressive despite a slightly hollow midpalate. Wait and see as this grows in the bottle. May be a bit overextracted this year. Best after 2011. 20,830 cases made."
Chateau Leoville Poyferre
