WEINWISSER: "Sattes Rubin, feiner lila Rand. Verführerisches Bouquet, Red-Currant-Pastillen, Waldhimbeeren und Cassis, frisch und verspielt, dahinter aber eine dichte Süsse. Saftiger, seidiger Gaumen, wieder mit sehr viel Fruchtdruck, mit Aromen zwischen blauen und roten Beeren, dahinter Dörrfrüchte, Kandis, im Finale ein Hauch von Rosinen (heisses Jahr oder überreifes Traubengut), erotisches, fast erschlagendes Finale."

JAMES SUCKLING: "Sweet tobacco and plum with hints of leather and cassis on the nose. Full bodied, with big velvety tannins and lots of fruit. Very rich and powerful, even chewy. Give this some time to mellow out. Pull the cork after 2016. Find the wine"

WINE SPECTATOR: "Wow. This shows so much ripe fruit and berry character with just the right hint of lead pencil and spice. Full-bodied and very chewy. Big and powerful. Beautiful wine. Superb. Best after 2012. 14,000 cases made."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "A brilliant effort, this 2003 displays a vigorous, intact, deep blue/purple color as well as notes of scorched earth, barbecue spices, incense, creme de cassis and cedarwood. Long, lush, medium to full-bodied, round and generous, this opulent Pauillac can be drunk now and over the next 5-8 years."

JANCIS ROBINSON: "Very dark purple. Looks exceptionally youthful. Very sumptuous, top-quality oak on the nose. Dusty, mineral, interesting flavours. Leapt out of the glass. This is exciting! Dense and complete. Just a bit dry and sudden on the finish at present."

THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Soft, elegant, charming and for the most part, ready for prime time drinking. The wine is full-bodied, with depth of flavor, but the short finish takes away some of the thunder here. The fruit, tannins, flavor and character are all that you need, it is that shortness in the finish that I wish was just a bit longer. If this was the only bottle on the table, it would be great. But when compared with other vintages, it held up, but did not shine. 10-15 years is probably the remaining window here."

DECANTER: "2003 was the year of the killer heatwave, and vines on shallow soils shrivelled under the onslaught, giving baked, raisiny wines. Pauillac has more clay, and thus moisture, so the vines suffered less stress. The nose is burly, hefty, and smoky, although still reserved. It´s rich in the mouth, with dense tannins and heft rather than finesse. It lacks sucrosity and some freshness and flair, but it´s not drying or flabby like so many 2003s. A powerful wine with a long, solid and sinewy finish."
