98 THE WINEADVOCATE: Perhaps the wine that jumped the most in score from when I first tasted these wines out of bottle in 2008, is the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Pluribus. Rated 94 back in 2008, it’s now a solid 98 and knocking on the door of perfection. This wine comes from a Spring Mountain vineyard northwest of the charming town of St. Helena. It has gorgeous notes of graphite, acacia flowers, blueberry liqueur, scorched earth and hot stones. Reminiscent of a top Graves, it is another full-bodied, rich, concentrated wine with good acidity as well as fabulous purity and concentration. I had not seen the Graves-like character in this wine prior to bottling and post-bottling, but it is there now. This stunner is open for business and its fragrance and suppleness suggest drinking it over the next two decades. Drink: 2014 - 2034 - Robert M. Parker, Jr. 96 WINE SPECTATOR: A rich, opulent, fleshy style, brimming with ripe black cherry, wild berry and currant flavors that are supple and well-focused, keeping the fruit well-centered and ending with ripe tannins that have a nice earthy, cedary edge. Brooding but very pure aromas of licorice, black cherry, violet, minerals, crushed rock, menthol and espresso. Very dense, deep and suave, displaying lovely definition and a light touch to its black fruit and mineral flavors. Not a particularly sweet style but with great finesse to its mid-palate texture and noble tannins. Superb, slowly mounting, very subtle finish. Wonderfully handled Spring Mountain tannins, but the wine is nevertheless quite powerful. Juicy and restrained but harmonious already. Surprisingly light on its feet and very long on the ripely tannic back end. A superb showing: this beauty is balanced to enjoy 2016 or to hold. It is very open-knit for a Bond wine at age ten and that’s a good thing, since we all want to drink these wines in our lifetime. This comes across as a Napa version of the famed Pauillac Pontet-Canet, with terrific licorice, cedarwood, blackberry, creme de cassis, toast, spice box and lead pencil notes in the aromatics and flavors of this drinkable, full-bodied, opulent wine that is strutting its stuff splendidly. Plush, sweet and large-scaled, but with almost surprising vinosity giving shape to the flavors of dark berries, coffee, mocha and iron. A huge wine with outstanding palate-staining persistence. Wonderfully dense and deep, if still a bit impenetrable. The slightly porty flavors of black fruits, minerals and menthol are still a bit youthfully monolithic and evolving very slowly. THE WINE ADVOCATE: "The 1994 Chardonnays, which were just released, are spectacular, with the ratings I bestowed on them last year confirmed in a tasting in October: Clos du Ciel (93), Cuvee Indigene (95), Mon Plaisir (94), and the lavishly rich, unctuously textured Pointe Rouge (96). The 1992 Les Pavots, reminiscent of a top-class St.-Julien/Pauillac, is the first vintage that has begun to exhibit some complex cedar, lead pencil, and cassis aromas. Medium to full-bodied, with impressive richness, this layered, intense yet balanced wine still needs another 2-3 years of cellaring, although it reveals more immediate charm and secondary aromas than its three younger siblings. It is a wine that will last for at least 20+ years. The blend for Peter Michael's Les Pavots proprietary red wine varies year to year, but the composition usually includes at least 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5%-15% Merlot, and 5%-15% Cabernet Franc. Sixty percent new French oak casks are utilized. The result is a wine that comes as close as any other California Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine to resembling a structured, rich, complex St.-Julien/Pauillac. The wine is more broad-shouldered and deep than most Bordeaux. Readers should be forewarned that Les Pavots is not made in an up-front, fruity style that begs for immediate consumption. They are rich, full-bodied, complex, restrained wines built for the long haul. That being said, Peter Michael's Les Pavots has enjoyed an unprecedented string of highly successful vintages. While the Peter Michael wines are represented in the major commercial markets throughout the United States, more and more of his wine is sold to the winery's mailing list clients.
