94 THE WINEADVOCATE: "Medium ruby-red. Expressive nose offers scents of currant, plum, tobacco, graphite and spicecake. Wonderfully sweet, broad and spicy, with a suggestion of cinnamon behind the currant and plum fruit; still quite youthful despite an incipent truffle note, with herbal accents providing energy. Surprisingly light on its feet and very long on the ripely tannic back end. A superb showing: this beauty is balanced to enjoy 2016 or to hold. Tannins are quite firm with air but this wine boasts terrific sweetness for the year. I might have guessed that this wine had a good percentage of Merlot." Drink: 2009 - 2034. - Robert M. 94 JAMES SUCKLING: "This is very perfumed with currants and flowers. I love the nose. Very balanced and deep full bodied wine with a long silky finish. I really like the texture and finesse to this. Very fascinating. Better in a year or two. 14+24+23+33. Find the wine"

93+ ANTONIO GALLONI: "Good deep ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of raspberry, red cherry, mocha and tobacco, enlivened by menthol and a distinctly rocky element. Very ripe but juicy and tightly coiled today, showing terrific energy but less easy sweetness and flesh than the Matriarch. But this is more sharply delineated and long, finishing with subtle suggestions of brown spices, tobacco and licorice. Built for a slow evolution in bottle." - Stephen Tanzer - May 2009.

Appeals right away for its rich, attractive sour cherry candy, vanilla and anise aromas and flavors that are well-integrated with smoky oak. The tannins are firm, but ultra-refined, and the finish is entirely dry. A well-made, elegant wine of place that needs time. 2012–2018."
