  • James Suckling

Lightly reductive with a floral touch to the ripe but fresh fruit and a touch of white pepper. Quite refined. Nicely chewy with medium to full body and a compact finish of good length. Needs some time in bottle. Drink from 2027."

  • Jeb Dunnuck

The second wine of Canon, the 2022 Croix Canon is based on 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot that spent 16-18 months in 30% new French oak. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a beautiful, medium to full-bodied Saint-Emilion that has a beautiful core of ripe black cherry fruit as well as classic notes of lead pencil, crushed stone, and graphite. It's ripe and balanced and has great mid-palate and sweet tannins. Don't let its accessibility fool you; this will cruise for two decades and is better than most Grand Vins out there."

  • Jane Anson

Ruby red colour, with cool blue fruit that is unusual in the vintage for its sap and reserve. As it opens the palate widens, and creamier damson and red cherry appear, without sacrificing the juice and lift through the palate. The austerity, that is offset with gunsmoke curls, is impressive, and this is a finessed Croix Canon that has a lot going for it. Bitter black chocolate gives focus on the finish. 45hl/h yield. 30% new oak."

  • Decanter

Smoke, liquorice, charred tobacco, coffee and mocha notes on the nose. Ripe and softly fleshy on the palate, this has density and chew but no overt heaviness, remains light and tight with grip to the super fine but supportive tannins that fill the mouth. Has a touch of austerity in the bite and clean tang to the fruit with mineral edges of liquorice and slate. There’s power here no doubt, but this has spark and energy, a liveliness with concentration of black fruit. There's juiciness and a sense of precise cleanness on the palate that is so appealing and then the focus and tension comes in at the end. It feels quite powerful with some hints of alcohol at the end but also gives a lifted mint and liquorice freshness. 3.5pH. Ageing 16-18 months , 30% new oak."

  • The Wine Advocate

The 2022 Croix Canon has turned out beautifully, mingling aromas of dark berries and cherries with hints of orange rind and petals. Medium to full-bodied, succulent and seamless, with a rich core of fruit, lively acids and a long, aromatic finish, it will offer a broad drinking window. As I've written before, recent vintages of this cuvée have confirmed its status as one of Bordeaux's finest second labels (though since it derives from dedicated holdings below Berliquet, it's not a "second wine" in the strict sense)."

  • The Wine Cellar Insider

You encounter flowers with a strong burst of mint before being greeted by cherries and sea salt aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, and brimming with vibrant, sweet cherries. The fruits are clean, pure, and elegant, finishing with a refreshing hint of mint. The year 2022 signifies a change here. Notably, for the first time, the blend comprises a majority of Cabernet Franc, with 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot. Drink from 2025-2040."

  • Lisa Perrotti-Brown

This is a blend of 41% Merlot and 59% Cabernet Franc, and the élevage was in 30% new oak for between 16 and 18 months. The prominent role for Cabernet Franc reflects the fact a 2-hectare parcel of Merlot has been pulled up in readiness for replanting here. A very attractive nose of toasted currants, violets, pencil shavings and graphite, the Cabernet Franc clearly in evidence here. Beautifully pure and linear at the start of the palate, with taut red cherry and a light saline edge, building in the middle to develop some breadth, with a touch of honeyed oak. There is a tight-knit and finely polished bed of tannins here, but they sit well within the wine;I can see this being ready in a couple of years, although it will evolve for a lot longer. The alcohol on the label is 14.5%."

  • Jancis Robinson

Deep crimson. Edgy. Nervy nose. For Cab Franc fans. Clean and fresh, slightly inky on the dry finish."

  • Wine Spectator

A slightly high-toned version, with cherry and damson plum notes laced with rose hip and iris details. Shows a sanguine echo on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 2,500 cases made, 100 cases imported."
