„delicious afternoon“ so befand ANN COLGIN zu unserem gemeinsamen Mittagessen hier im Napa Valley wo wir aktuell gerade weilen – siehe Instagram. Uns verbindet eine mehr als 25-jährige Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit. Wir waren gemeinsam im Restaurant des Hotels Auberge de Soleil und genossen neben einem wunderschönen 2011 Colgin Syrah die gesamte Palette der 2014er COLGIN Weine. Und da wir Ihnen diesen Jahrgang bis dato noch vorenthalten hatten - wir gönnten den Weinen noch etwas Reife in unseren Kellern - freuen wir uns Ihnen nunmehr 2014 COLGIN CARIAD, 2014 COLGIN IX ESTATE PROPRIETARY RED, 2014 COLGIN IX ESTATE SYRAH, 2014 COLGIN TYCHSON HILL VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON als ASSORTMENT anbieten zu können. 

ANN COLGIN bestimmte wie viele andere die Erfolgsgeschichte des Napa Valley der frühen 90er Jahre entscheidend mit. Namen wie Screaming Eagle und Harlan Estate entstanden alle während dieser Zeit des Aufbruchs. Nachdem sie sich im Jahr 1988 auf der Napa Valley Wine Auction in Bill Harlans Meadowood in das Napa Valley verliebte, begann sie umgehend an ihrem eigenen Label zu arbeiten. Im Jahr 1992 war es dann so weit, COLGIN WINE CELLARS wurde aus der Taufe gehoben und mit gekaufter Frucht aus dem Herb Lamb Weinberg wurde der erste Jahrgang COLGIN abgefüllt. Im Jahr 1998 schließlich erwarb ANN COLGIN ein traumhaft schön gelegenes Stück Land weit oberhalb des Lake Hennessy, das sie Schritt für Schritt bepflanzte. 10 Jahre nach dem Start schließlich wurde mit dem Jahrgang 2002 der erster Jahrgang IX Estate abgefüllt. Ein Wein, der seitdem Jahr für Jahr eine Benchmark setzt.  

ANN COLGIN hatte alle 2014er Weine zum Lunch 3 Stunden zuvor dekantiert. Was wir dann im Glas vorfanden, war ein beeindruckender showdown eines großen Jahrganges. Unglaublich dunkle Früchte, je nach Wein und Lage unterschiedlichste Mineralik und Terroirnoten, mit Bleistift, Leder, feinsten Tanninen und perfekt gereifter Frucht. Keine überpowerten Weine, sondern stilistisch eine Mischung aus einem La Mission Haut Brion und eben einem großen Kalifornier, sehr präzise gezeichnet. Sehen Sie sich die einzelnen Kommentare an, schwelgen Sie und freuen sich auf das, was da kommt… 

2014 COLGIN TYCHSON HILL 

100 JAMES SUCKLING: "Fantastic aromas of sweet tobacco, rose petals, mushrooms and dark fruits such as raspberries and currants. Citrus blossom, too. Full body, firm and velvety tannins, yet this remains tight and polished. Very reserved and beautiful. Subtle texture. Savory. You are going to want to drink this now! However, it's a beauty built for aging. The purity of cabernet sauvignon (95%) is spellbinding." 98 THE WINEADVOCATE: "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is an extraordinary wine with an inky bluish purple color and classic aromatics of crème de cassis, white flowers, lead pencil shavings, pen ink, incense and camphor. It hits the palate with full-bodied richness but not a bit of heaviness. Great precision, vibrant underlying acidity, and sweet, long tannins make this a sumptuous mouthful of wine with a finish of close to 45+ seconds. This fabulous effort can be drunk now or cellared for 25-30 years." 

2014 COLGIN IX ESTATE PROPRIETARY RED 

98+THE WINEADVOCATE: "From their steep hillside vineyards on Pritchard Hill, the 2014 Proprietary Red IX Estate is an old-fashioned Médoc blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, but with some Cabernet Franc (rarely seen in the Médoc these years) as well as Merlot and Petit Verdot. Striking aromatics of violets, forest floor, loamy soil nuances, blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry soar from the glass of this spectacular 2014. The acidity seems reasonable but on the lower side, the texture is magnificent, and the overall purity and equilibrium flawless. This is a wine pushing, even demanding, a three-digit score once again, but I’m holding back – at least for now. This magnificent effort from Colgin should drink beautifully for 25-30 years." 98 JAMES SUCKLING: "Gorgeous aromas of lean pencil, blackcurrants and raspberries. So perfumed and glorious. Full-bodied, chewy and intense with great length and intensity. Silky and muscular yet agile and energetic. Needs three to four years to resolve some of the tannins." 

2014 COLGIN CARIAD 

98 WINESPECTATOR: "A big, rich, deep and caressing style, with wonderful textural nuances that smooth out the chewy dark berry, graphite, gravel and black licorice flavors. Most impressive on the finish, which sails along, gaining depth and persistence. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2038." 97 JAMES SUCKLING: "Extremely aromatic with lead pencil and hints of currant undertone. Full body, with silky tannins and a very, very long finish. The texture is just right. This is so racy and refined with fabulous texture. I love the savory character. A wine with a solid core of fruit and super silky tannins. It is beautiful and dense yet refined. 49% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 10% petit verdot and 6% cabernet franc. " 

2014 IX ESTATE SYRAH 

97 JAMES SUCKLING: "Incredible aromas of grilled meat, blackberries, rose petals and black velvet. Medium to full body and ultra-velvety tannins — even if this doesn't show at first. It lags for five or six seconds and then grows and grows. Linear structure." 95 THE WINEADVOCATE: "Lastly, the 2014 Syrah IX Estate has this incredibly fragrant, flowery bouquet that makes it seem as if there were some Viognier co-fermented with it, but it’s always 100% Syrah coming from their steep vineyards. Oodles of honeysuckle, blackberry, black cherry, graphite and some exotic white fruits seem present in this full-bodied, lush, savory, sexy and intense wine that is irresistible in 2014, and for that reason, destined to be drunk in its first 10-15 years, although I suspect it could last longer."
