Jeb Dunnuck: Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2022 Château Pavie is 52% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon raised in 75% new barrels for 20 months. It brings a more focused, precise style in its darker berries, graphite, crushed stone, and floral aromatics and flavors. These carry to a full-bodied Pavie with flawless overall balance, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This pure, powerful, yet aristocratic Pavie will benefit from 7-8 years (you can drink it even today) and have 3-4 decades of longevity."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown: I have long admired the wines of Nairac so it was disappointing when in some recent vintages there was to wine produced. Now managed by Grand Chais de France there is better consistency here, and the latest result is this rather fine 2022. I find the nose to be layered with honey-drizzled pear and quince, with a bright minerally edge which feels typical of Nairac. This is matched by a delightfully energetic and poised palate, with layers of citrus and orchard fruits, swirled in a sweet and waxy richness, with vibrant acid freshness. A top result with fine cellaring potential."

Smooth and determined, this pulses with energy and cooling freshness from the start, so juicy on the mid palate, mouthwateringly so but with a soft sweetness that is really pleasant and together with slightly chewy tannins gives a plentiful mouthfeel. The finish is a touch narrow suggesting this wine has such a long life ahead yet it's one I immediately wanted another glass of and is delicious to drink even now!"

Grilled citrus, white flowers, and a beautiful sense of stony minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it's medium-bodied, has a fresh, focused, yet concentrated mouthfeel, as well as bright acidity. It's rich and textured, yet remarkably fresh and focused. This hit 14% with a pH of 3.29. It’s great today and will be great in 8-10 years as well."

Jeb Dunnuck: The 2022 Château Valandraud is sensational, offering a massive array of blackcurrants, chocolate, smoked tobacco, baking spices, and truffly earth. Full-bodied and deeply layered, it has a velvety mouthfeel, polished tannins, and remarkable purity. It reminds me of a hypothetical blend of the 2020 and 2019. Florence und Daniel Cathiard – das Weingut und seine Besitzer Der Ursprung des Weinguts geht in das 14. Jahrhundert zurück. Für lange Zeit war Smith Haut Lafitte dann im Besitz des Bordeaux Weinhändlers Eschenauer. 1990 kaufte der heutige Inhaber, Daniel Cathiard das Anwesen. Er war zusammen mit Jean-Claude Killy, zweimaliger Olympiateilnehmer und ist nach wie vor ein begnadeter Skifahrer. Daniel und Florence Cathiard verdienten Ihren Lebensunterhalt als Umsatzriesen mit einer selbst aufgebauten, nahezu weltweit agierenden Sportartikelkette. Diese gründete Daniel Cathiard, nachdem er eine von seinem Vater übernommene Supermarktkette bereits zur zehntgrößten Kette in Frankreich ausgebaut hatte. Cathiard modernisierte das Herstellungsverfahren und die gesamten Produktionsanlagen auf Smith Haut Lafitte und stellte ein Team von Önologen rund um den Berater Michel Rolland ein. Außerdem erhöhte er die Verwendung von Eichenfässern. Zu wenig der Selbstbestätigung, betätigte er sich anschließend äußerst erfolgreich als Präsident von Mc Cann Europa. Alle diese Engagements aber gingen als Investment in Smith Haut Lafitte über. Seit 1999 besitzen die Cathiards zusätzlich das wunderschöne Hotel Les Sources de Caudalie. Wenn Sie es sich einmal so richtig gut gehen lassen wollen, dann sollten Sie dort einmal übernachten. Für Essen und Trinken bleibt aber dann nicht mehr viel übrig. Doch bevor Sie sich im dortigen Beauty Bereich mit Traubenkernöl einreiben lassen, geben Sie Ihr Geld lieber im angeschlossenen Restaurant aus, das macht zwar nicht schöner, dafür aber mehr Spaß! Die Zweitweine sind eine sichere Bank, in guten Jahrgängen definitiv Spitzen - Deals. Wir predigen ja immer wieder: Kaufen Sie Zweitwein aus großen Jahrgängen. Les Haut de Smith mit einer Produktionsmenge von 5.500 Kisten ist ein Wein von unglaublicher Feinheit, Aromatik und Komplexität. Wenn Sie sich die Bewertungen ansehen, kommen Sie fast ins Zweifeln, ob es sich hier wirklich um einen Zweitwein handelt. Ebenso wie Le Petit Haut Lafitte. Pessac Leognan in Bordeaux –Terroir von Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte und Herstellung der Weine 72 Hektar stehen auf Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte unter Reben, der Weißwein ist ein fast 100%iger Sauvignon Blanc, lediglich 5% Semillon und 5% Sauvignon Gris finden je nach Jahrgang Verwendung im Blend. Der Rotwein wird aus den Rebsorten Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (35%) und Cabernet Franc (10%) assembliert. Zunächst findet eine Gärung in Edelstahltanks statt, danach reift der Wein zu 50 Prozent für etwa 1,5 Jahre in neuen Barriques. Das Erfolgsrezept auf dem Anwesen sind niedrige Erträge, Abfüllung ohne Filtrierung und Schönung und nicht zuletzt die unermüdliche Arbeit im Weinberg und den Rebflächen. Die Weine reifen in Eichenholzfässern, die in der Chateau-eigenen Küferei hergestellt werden. Die Rebstöcke werden mit organischem Kompost gedüngt, außerdem setzt das Weingut auf Pferde, die den Weinberg und das Anbaugebiet bewirtschaften. Mittlerweile ist auch die Pflanzung selbst selektierter und gezüchteter Klone sowie der Ersatz aller chemischer durch organische Produkte auf Smith Haut Lafitte Standard, über den man nicht spricht.

Auf Chateau Laville Haut Brion, der Weißweinparzelle von Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, stehen lediglich drei Hektar unter Reben. 60% Sémillion und 40% Sauvignon blanc bilden die Cuvee des Laville Haut Brion, von dem es jährlich nur etwa 900 Kisten gibt. The wine offers soaring intensity and an enduring sense of balance and power. It has also entered a stunning phase in its lifeline, yet it still possesses that inner energy and youthfulness that ensures an even longer aging trajectory ahead. The bouquet is singular both in terms of its varietal purity and its aromatic reach. In many respects, this wine comes closest to the legendary 1990 Le Pergole Torte Riserva, an edition made only once in Montevertine's history. Indeed, this wine may have an upper leg on that wine given that inner youthfulness I mentioned above. The bouquet emits dark fruit and hints of exotic spice. The mouthfeel shows beautiful texture, fiber and even smoothness."

This vintage produced, soft, pleasant wines that have been ready almost since their release and La Tour Haut-Brion seems still to be going strong. Champagner Coeur de Cuvee Brut 1er Cru 2014 Diese außergewöhnliche Cuvée, die sich durch ihre beeindruckende Dichte und Energie auszeichnet, entfaltet am Gaumen ein vielschichtiges Aromenprofil von Aprikose, gebackenem Apfelkuchen und feinen Honignuancen, welches harmonisch mit blumigen Kamillennoten verschmilzt. The Wine Advocate: Here's our new little super star from the Tuscan Coast. The 2018 Massetino is Merlot with a dash of Cabernet Franc that makes all the difference in terms of the wine's aromatic precision and its overall staying power. Dark fruit and dried blackberry are followed by exotic spice and campfire ash. The aromas are fluid and relaxed, flowing seamlessly in unison and grace. If you love Masseto, you can't miss the Massetino. This wine offers a whole new take on the world-famous Merlot, and if we are to be honest, it paints a path to where future vintages of Masseto are going as an expression of a vineyard and territory rather than just a strict read of one grape."

Jeb Dunnuck: The 2019 Massetino is 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. This is only the third vintage of this cuvée, which adds a splash of Cabernet Franc to give a dramatically different take on Masseto. Ripe black cherries, currants, tobacco leaf, scorched earth, and ample graphite are just some of the nuances here, and it does have a slightly more floral, herbal, focused edge compared to the more round and opulent Grand Vin. Rock solid on the palate and structured, tannic, yet balanced and concentrated, it's built for the long haul and will need 7-8 years to hit maturity, but it’s going to have 25-30 years of overall longevity."

The Wine Advocate: The 2016 Único was perfumed and elegant, showcasing a very good vintage in the region. Winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga started in 2015-a powerful year-and he remembers 2016 as a very balanced year, with higher yields and finer-boned wines. The winter was mild, and there was a cooler than average spring and a warm summer. September was dry, which provided healthy grapes and balanced ripening. The harvest started the 22nd of September and finished the 11th of October. The bottled wine is 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.82 and 4.8 grams of acidity. It has the old Vega perfume, intoxicating, complex and nuanced, full of personality and a very energetic palate, vibrant and fresh, not lacking power but with lots of elegance. The wine is released 10 years after the harvest, combining time in new and used American and French oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats, and it obviously spends plenty of time in bottle. This is a monumental vintage of Único. A total of 92,292 bottles, 3,695 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in May 2022."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown: The 2022 UV-SL Vineyards Chardonnay was tasted as a barrel sample. Super intense notes of lime leaves, green mango, and green apples jump from the glass with hints of wet pebbles, honeysuckle, and allspice. The full-bodied palate is so light on its feet, with vibrant citrus and mineral sparks and a lively backbone to lift the long yeasty/zesty finish. This vineyard is named after one of Sonoma’s most reputable vineyard managers, Ulises Valdez Sr. (UV), who passed away recently. The site is on Stoetz Lane (SL), only six miles from the Pacific Ocean, up on the hills around Graton and Occidental. Aubert and Valdez Sr. collaborated on the planting of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir here. There's a real mix of heritage clones here, making it quite complex. Around 2,000 cases will be made."

James Suckling: Intense aromas of apples, green tea leaf oil and cooked apple. Full-bodied yet so reserved and intense, with a tight palate and a long, long finish. The concentration is phenomenal, but it’s framed by near perfect phenolics. Tightly wound and weightless. So spicy at the end. Reminiscent of Montrachet. Grand cru quality. Goes on for minutes. This is fantastic now to understand it’s potential but will be even better in years to come."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown: The 2022 Larry Hyde & Sons Chardonnay, tasted as a barrel sample, rockets from the glass with intense notes of grapefruit essence, juicy white peaches, and fresh pineapple leading to touches of orange blossoms, candied ginger, and chopped cashews with a hint of honeycomb. The full-bodied palate bursts with concentrated stone and tropical fruit layers, supported by a refreshing backbone and creamy texture, leading to a lingering ginger ale note on the finish of this delicious wine. Planted with the Corton Charlemagne and Old Wente clones on St Georges rootstock, this is one of the last vineyards to be harvested, hence a long hang-time."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown: The 2022 Powder House Chardonnay, tasted as a barrel sample, is a bit shy to begin, needing a little shaking to wake up notes of tarte au citron, lime cordial, peach preserves, and baking bread, plus hints of wet slate and sea spray. The full-bodied palate is tense and intense, featuring a crisp backbone to define the citrus and mineral layers, finishing on a lingering marzipan note. This estate vineyard, on Goldridge soils near downtown Forestville, was planted in 2013. There are basically 2 clones, Hyde and Mt Eden, on 420 A & 114 rootstocks, and the row direction is due north."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown: The 2022 Chardonnay Lauren Estate was tasted as a barrel sample. Wow - you could just smell this all day, notes of candied orange peel, lemon tart, lime zest, pink grapefruit, and ginger tea emanate from the glass with hints of baker's years, Marcona almonds, and crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate has beautiful tension and so much energy that it vibrates with citrus and mineral layers, finishing with long, lingering ginger and orange peel notes. Lauren Estate, named after Mark Aubert's daughter, is a vineyard planted to four different clones: two old Wente clones (Hyde and Hudson), Mt Eden, and Corton Charlemagne. There are 6 acres here, planted in 1999 on an ancient seabed."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown: The 2022 CIX Estate Chardonnay was tasted as a barrel sample. It comes bounding out of the glass with notes of freshly squeezed lemons, Granny Smith apples, freshly shaved ginger, and chalk dust, leading to wafts of coriander seed and white pepper. The full-bodied palate is tight-knit and racy with a chalky undercurrent to the citrus flavors, finishing long and minerally. CIX stands for 109, as this vineyard was called “parcel 109” when Aubert bought it. Planted in 2008 to the Montrachet clone, the berries accumulate flavor very slowly here."

Jane Anson: Even is a lighter-styled vintage like 2017, Troplong Mondot needs serious coaxing if you are looking at early drinking. This was an important vintage in the development of the estate, with the arrival of new owners and of director Aymeric de Gironde, and a move towards earlier harvests and less intensive extraction during fermentation. It's still pretty young but already showcasing stunning depths and nuance, with iris and peony floral character given lift to the muscular cassis and damson fruit. 65% new oak for ageing, Thomas Duclos consultant. Tasted a few times this year, and in the end its quality has placed it among the wines of the year - but definitely remember to give it a good number of hours in the carafe before drinking."

Decanter: This wine is surprisingly accessible, with a charming, bright pomegranate and ripe cherry fruit, and rose petal, pepper and mineral notes. The texture is silky and fresh - it lacks the imposing density of some years (like 2020), but it is beautiful nonetheless. Méo has 2.75 hectares, second only to Château de la Tour, and the parcels are very well placed in La Garenne (which he calls Pres du Château), Les Chioures, and Grand Maupertuis. The 2021 vintage is a blend of all of the parcels."

James Suckling: The nose is really glorious with strawberry, wet-earth, blackberry and dark-mushroom character. Full body, a solid core of fruit and beautiful tannins. It’s polished and velvety. Better in 2022 but gorgeous."

Am eleganten Gaumen mit straffem Gerüst und feinspröder Textur, eine grandiose Präzision. Im gebündelten Finale Wildkirschen, Graphit und zarte Adstringenz. Ein klassischer Pomerol, der seinen Weg gefunden hat! "

Nase: Feine Vanillenoten und der Duft von frischem Popcorn. Dazu kommen frische Akzente von Limette und saftiger Birne. Alles sehr harmonisch und präzise, zugleich animierend und strukturiert, mit einer angenehmen Balance zwischen Frische und dezenter Würze.   Gaumen: Sehr ausgewogen und elegant. Eine feine Zitrusfrische mit Anklängen von Grapefruit verbindet sich mit einer subtilen, spielerischen Süße. Erinnernd an eine Zitronentarte aus Menton. Perfekte Säure, feiner Schmelz und ein harmonisches Zusammenspiel, das dem Wein Leichtigkeit, Spannung und einen animierenden Trinkfluss verleiht. Unser Fazit: Ein deutscher Chardonnay, der Maßstäbe setzt!

Jancis Robinson: Very pale greenish gold. Light aromatic nose that I took for a Riesling when tasting inattentively. Then wonderfully substantial on the palate with a real beginning, middle and end. Juicy and honeyed with a satin texture. Long. Very complex. Waxy. Long and confident. But it fell apart slightly in the glass."

The Wine Advocate: Surrounded by the grands crus Ungeheuer and Jesuitengarten, the Ziegler was a single vineyard until 1971, when it became part of the Ungeheuer. The boulder-rich soils are composed of weathered sandstone, basalt and limestone debris. Now classified as VDP.Erste Lage (1G like Erstes Gewächs), the 2022 Forster Ziegler Riesling Trocken 1G opens with a pure, fresh and refined, rather stony bouquet of bright fruits. Dense and elegant on the palate, this is a lean yet intense and racy, stimulatingly saline and intense-finishing Riesling classic from the Mittelhaardt. Less powerful than Rieslings from Forst normally are, this is a playful and savory dry Riesling with character and tension and a long and salivating finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2024."

The Wine Advocate: The 1985 Château La Conseillante has long been one of my favorite vintages of this decade and this ex-château bottle, opened by co-proprietor Valmy Nicolas, did nothing to change that opinion. The nose is disarming with those gorgeous warm gravel scents infusing the melted red berry fruit. This is Pomerol through and through, fully mature yet still captivating. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, moderate depth, displaying that fleshiness and comeliness that the finest 1985 Pomerol wines possess. It is almost easy-drinking in nature, so much so that you almost miss its inherent complexity. At its peak now, if you own any bottles, enjoy them now, though larger formats will offer 10-15 years of pleasure. Tasted November 2015."

The Wine Advocate: Dense ruby/garnet-colored, this 1993 reveals a smoky, earthy, dark fruit character, medium body, moderate tannin, and good richness and balance. After 2-3 years of cellaring, it will be an attractive, mid-weight wine for drinking between 2002-2010."

James Suckling: This magnificent riesling Spatlese combines cool crystalline purity with floral warmth. Very exciting interplay of racy acidity with aromatic grape sweetness and delicate minerality on the medium-bodied palate. The super-long and sleek finish has great stony intensity and mouthwatering freshness that pulls you inexorably back for more of this delicate Saar masterpiece. Great aging potential. Drink or hold."

Decanter: The aromas of the 2021 Screaming Eagle are so precise and beautifully compact, giving a refined sense of finesse through savoury incense and dried spearmint intermixed with pure black fruit and graphite notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine opens up to an expansive mouthfeel with perfect concentration and depth of flavours, exuding black currants, just-picked blackberry, and Bing cherry, with a foundation of ironstone minerality. Palate etching tannins are multi-dimensional. It is a serious wine with tension, remarkable grip, intensity, and a firm spine of zesty acidity that brightens the lengthy finish. Perfectly balanced and expressive and even a bit savage. Best after 2027."

The Wine Cellar Insider: 2008 Joanin Becot is stuffed with blackberry, oak, spice, smoke and licorice aromatics. Soft, round and already approachable, this black cherry tinged wine should drink well young."

The Wine Advocate: Disgorged in February 2023 after five years sur lattes, with a dosage of seven grams per liter, Vilmart’s 2017 Coeur de Cuvée is a commendable achievement in what was a challenging vintage. Laurent Champs harvested between the first and eighth of September, narrowly avoiding the rain that plagued many wines of this vintage. Composed of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir from Les Blanches Voies, it reveals aromas of pear, vanilla and pastries mingled with subtle spices. Richer and more demonstrative than the 2016 edition, it showcases a textured palate marked by tangy acidity and chalky undertones, leading to a lingering finish."

The Wine Advocate: The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, coming from a small section of estate vines closer to the Napa river. It is entirely fermented in French oak, but only about 5% is new. The grapes are pressed straight to barrels and kept on their gross lees. The wine is fermented using native yeasts. This vintage, the nose is not at all shy-it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of ripe peaches, passion fruit and musk perfume plus wafts of honeycomb, elderflower, ripe gooseberries and lemongrass with a waft of Bosc pears. The palate is super intense and yet ethereally weighted, light-bodied and oh-so-fine, elegant and refreshing, featuring a whole array of chalk and sea spray sparks, creating a shimmer to all the many citrus and stone fruit layers, finishing with great length and energy. There is a truly interesting phenolic texture to the palate that reminds me of some Chardonnays, particularly Burgundian examples. Winemaker Nick Gislason commented that the gross lees contain a lot of phenolic content, which is where the wine picks up that textural component. Love it!"

In der Nase: Frische Zitrone, weißer Pfirsich und Mirabelle. Dahinter eine feine, fast cremige Anmutung, die an einen Hauch von Sahne erinnert, ohne die Klarheit zu überdecken. Unterlegt wird das Aromenspiel von kühler Mineralität. Am Gaumen: Saftige Grapefruit und frische Citrusnoten sorgen für Zug und Präzision. Dazu kommt eine feine salzige Würze, die an Salz-Popcorn erinnert und dem Wein Spannung verleiht. Im Kern zeigt sich gelbe Frucht, die an reife Pomelo erinnert.
