90 WINESPECTATOR: "Mouton comes through again. Impressive ´93, deep in color and full-bodied, boasting plenty of currant, black cherry, mint and toast character. Well crafted, showing depth for this vintage. Give the tannins some time to mellow. Try in 2000."

18 JANCIS ROBINSON: "This one really turned on the charm and its was only when tasting the 1989 immediately afterwards that its very slight shortcomings (a certain blowsiness) were exposed. Glowing ruby with a foxy rim. Some brunt notes on the nose with great richness – very obviously a hot vintage. Rich, rich, rich. Blackcurrant fruit gum character. Much bigger and bolder than the 2000, for instance. Already smooth, welcoming and appetising. Much more refreshing on the palate than the nose. Quite a tingle on the finish. Some very fine tannins in retreat and definite acidity. A bit skinnier ultimately than the 1989 and slightly powdery on the finish."

90 JAMES SUCKLING: "Mouton's great winemaking comes to the fore in this wine in the face of the difficult year of 1993. It's a surprisingly substantial Bordeaux for such a wet growing season, even now displaying strong blackberries and mint flavors. Full-bodied with tannins that are just coming around"

94 ANTONIO GALLONI: "(81% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc, and 9% merlot- pH 3.69- IPT 60- 12.2% alcohol- 76% new oak- a 79% selection): Bright red with a pale rim. Knockout nose of aromatic herbs, strawberry, sweet spices and acacia flower- yet another wine strongly marked by its cabernet franc presence. Fresh and vibrant, this absolutely dances on the palate with strawberry, sour red cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by gunflint and herbs. High acidity provides great clarity and cut to the long, floral, smoothly tannic finish. This has improved considerably with bottle age. Harvested from September 18 through October 3, this Mouton offers amazing balance and fragrance. In 1990 Mouton was still using a heavy toast for its barriques, which resulted in a smoky quality in the wines that was considered by many to be just as typical of Mouton as its opulence. "But we began turning things back in 1993, as we saw that our 1992 was a little unbalanced from the use of heavily toasted barrels," said Tourbier remarks. 94."

THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "More medium than full-bodied, with a bright, crisp edge to the cassis, cranberry and cherry, there is still a regal touch and nice spicy character to the red fruits. Earth, leaf, tobacco, roasted coffee bean and herbs make their presence known from start to finish along with the sweet and tart piquant red fruits. This is at peak and should be consumed sooner than later."

THE WINEADCOVATE: "After less than persuasive performances in two potentially great years, 1989 and 1990, Mouton-Rothschild appears to have settled down, producing fine efforts in recent vintages, culminating with the enormously promising, unquestionably profound 1995. The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015."
