Chateau Ausone
Chateau Ausone 1990
92+ ANTONIO GALLONI: "Red-ruby with a hint of amber at the edge. Red cherry, redcurrant, minerals, chocolate and a medicinal hint of cough syrup on the nose. Minerally, fresh and juicy, with penetrating acids framing the rich fruit. Finishes very long, with dusty tannins spreading over the entire palate. Turned slightly dry as it opened in the glass." - Stephen Tanzer - Jul 2002.
92 WINESPECTATOR: "Chewy, monolithic wine. Aromas of dried herbs and berries. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a tar, tobacco aftertaste. Puckers your mouth with tannins. Will improve with age.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2005. 2,150 cases made." - JS.
90 THE WINEADVOCATE: "Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London. Dark claret core with deep brick/tawny rim. The nose is odd: very polished with some noticeable volatility at first, lifted red fruits: kirsch, juniper berries, a touch of blood orange and a little ginger. Good definition, but it takes some getting used to. It develops a digestive biscuit aroma with time. The palate is medium-bodied, certainly less complex than more recent vintages but it is well balanced. There is a touch of piquancy here, tart red-berried fruits, relatively lightweight but very fresh towards the finish. There are superior examples of this wine out there. Tasted December 2009." - Neal Martin.
